1968
Laying the Groundwork
When we launched in June 1968, we were a fledgling model for local giving, building the foundation for sustainable philanthropy and stewarding gifts that would benefit the region for generations. Through steady growth, we became a respected organization locally and among our peers nationally.
Growth
Expanding the Table
As our region changed, so did we. Leadership grew more diverse, loyalties shifted from institutions to causes, and new generations began defining philanthropy on their own terms. At the same time, persistent gaps in wages, wealth, homeownership, education, and life expectancy demanded greater attention. We responded by leaning into mission-driven collaboration and seeking out voices too often missing from the conversation.
Today
Accelerating Change
Through disaster, recession, pandemic, and social unrest, our community has shown it can do hard things together. Today we’re working with greater urgency and sharper focus to deliver immediate relief while building lasting pathways to economic mobility across generations.
Our Reach
Most of our grants and initiatives focus on the greater Richmond region, but our networks extend nationwide. We support three regional affiliates serving the Middle Peninsula and Northern Neck.
While we have deep knowledge of local needs and the people working to address them, many donors have ties and interests beyond our region and choose to give through us to other communities.
Greater Richmond region
Cities of Richmond, Ashland, Colonial Heights, Hopewell and Petersburg; counties of Chesterfield, Hanover, Henrico, Goochland and Powhatan
Regional Affiliates
Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula, including the counties of Mathews, Gloucester, Middlesex, Northumberland and Lancaster
Expanding Rural Philanthropy
We are proud to grow and promote rural philanthropy through our ongoing support of three regional community foundations. With the direction of local staff and advisory boards, the affiliate foundations are well-positioned to meet the unique needs of their communities.
