Accepted Assets

Gifts We Accept

We accept gifts of all sizes and types. Your donation(s) can be used to set up a new charitable fund, add to your existing fund or a community impact fund, or later, become part of your estate plans. The Community Foundation is recognized as a public charity by the IRS and you will receive the maximum tax benefits allowed by law.

Common gifts and how to send them

Liquid assets such as cash and securities are the basic types of assets you can donate to your fund. Your donation is tax deductible on the date that the assets are received. Here are some of the services we provide for the transfer of your funds into your account. Click on the + to view more detail.

Wire transfer Most secure for large gifts Sent directly from your bank to ours. Your bank may charge its own fee.

A wire transfer is our most secure option for large gifts. Ask your bank to send the wire using the details below, and include your name so we can credit your fund promptly.

Then let us know it’s coming. Email us the name of the security, the number of shares and the fund it should support, so we can credit your gift correctly and promptly.

Check Accepted, but electronic gifts are safer and faster. Mail only to our secure lockbox.

Check fraud is on the rise, and the U.S. Postal Service continues to experience delivery delays. While we accept checks, we recommend our electronic options for a safer, faster gift.

If you prefer to mail a check, make it payable to “Community Foundation for a greater Richmond” and write your fund name in the memo line.

Please do not mail checks to our office. For your security, send them to our secured payment lockbox:

PO Box 49044
Baltimore, MD 21297-9044

Secure giving, and a note about fees

Online gifts by bank transfer or card are processed securely by a trusted third-party payment processor. The small processing fees on these gifts are set and charged by that processor, not by the Community Foundation. If you give by card, you can choose to cover the fee so your full gift goes to work.

Complex and legacy gifts

Gifts of retirement assets, property and business interests can create significant resources for the causes you care about, and are often more tax efficient than cash. Please contact us before making one of these gifts so we can plan it with you, and your advisor if you wish.

IRA qualified charitable distributions

If you are 70 1/2 or older, you can give up to $111,000 a year directly from your IRA. At 73 or older, the gift can count toward your required minimum distribution. QCDs can go to many of our funds, but not to donor advised funds.

Life Insurance

A policy you no longer need can become a charitable gift. Name us as owner and beneficiary to receive a deduction for its value, or for premiums you continue to pay.

Real estate and other property

We accept real estate, privately held stock, business interests, and personal property. Most of these gifts require an independent appraisal.

Gifts through your estate

Name a fund in your will or trust, or as beneficiary of a retirement account, brokerage account or life insurance policy.
