Programs and Initiatives

Bringing It All Together

At the Community Foundation for a greater Richmond, we bring people and organizations together to strengthen the place we all call home. Through our programs and initiatives, we support collective giving, convene partners across sectors, celebrate outstanding educators, open doors through scholarships, and help nonprofit leaders grow. We invite you to explore some of our key initiatives below.

SisterFund’s vision is to invest in community-based organizations engaged in directly impacting Black women and girls through efforts that build positive futures, specifically through gains in education, workforce development, leadership, and health.

Ujima Legacy Fund Leaders

Ujima Legacy Fund

Ujima Legacy Fund is a collective giving circle created by and for civic minded African American men. The fund supports projects in the Richmond region that will promote equitable outcomes among youth and young adults, ages 12 to 21 years, with emphasis on Black/African American youth. Ujima Legacy Fund seeks to support nonprofits that empower youth through education related initiatives.

R.E.B. Awards

Rudolph Bunzl, retired Chairman and CEO of American Filtrona Corporation, and his wife Esther, a community leader, began working with the Community Foundation in 1987 to develop the R.E.B. Awards for Teaching Excellence as a way to promote and improve public education. In 1988, they converted their private foundation into the first supporting organization of the Community Foundation. This partnership was enhanced by the creation of the R.E.B. Awards for Distinguished Educational Leadership, which recognizes outstanding public-school principals. In addition to funding the R.E.B. Awards programs, the R.E.B. Foundation makes annual grants to support other educational programs, as well as cultural and social service programs.

Scholarships

Over 70 scholarships at the Community Foundation are offered to students living in the Richmond region and other Virginia locations. Each scholarship was established by a generous individual, family, or organization with a desire to assist high school students, recent high school graduates, and adult learners to continue their education.
