Start a Fund

Opening a fund is simpler than you think

You can open a donor advised fund online in approximately 10 minutes, or you can work with us directly to set up any type of fund in just a few days. In either case, a Philanthropic Advisor will follow up to welcome you, answer questions, and help you begin making grants.

What to expect

  1. Review your options
Look over our types of funds, investment options and policies so you know which choices you will make.
  2. Complete the online application
A five-step form collects everything we need to open your fund. Your progress is saved as you go, so you can pause and come back at any time.
  3. Make your first contribution
Start a gift of at least $5,000 using any of our accepted assets. The gift becomes irrevocable once your application is approved. If it is not approved, we will return your contribution.
  4. Sign your fund agreement
We will prepare your fund agreement and send it to you electronically for your signature.
  5. Meet your Philanthropic Advisor
Your advisor will confirm we received your application, answer any questions and finalize the details of your contribution.
  6. Start giving
Once your fund is active, you can recommend grants anytime through the Fund Portal.

FAQs about starting a fund

Can I open other types of funds online? The online application is for donor advised funds. We’ll set up other funds with you directly.

Designated, field of interest, scholarship and other funds involve a few more decisions, such as eligibility criteria or the organizations your fund will support. Contact a Philanthropic Advisor and we will walk you through the process and prepare your fund agreement together.

Can I open a fund with an affiliate foundation? Yes. The same application works for Gloucester, Mathews and River Counties.

When you complete the application, choose the Gloucester Community Foundation, Mathews Community Foundation or River Counties Community Foundation. Your fund will be administered by our team and support the community you choose.

Can my financial advisor be involved? Absolutely. We regularly work alongside attorneys, accountants and wealth advisors.

Your advisor can join your conversations with us, help decide which assets to give, and make sure your fund fits your overall financial and estate plans.

Information for professional advisors

Who can advise on my fund, now and later? You can name family members as advisors today and successors for the future.

Everyone you name as an advisor can recommend grants and view fund activity. You can also name successor advisors, or tell us where your fund’s grants should go after your lifetime. You can update these choices at any time.
